Pulmonary Function Study Instructions

PURPOSE
To determine lung volumes and flow rates to assist physician in diagnosing various pulmonary problems.

PREPARATION
Wear loose fitting comfortable clothes. Be sure you know what medications you are taking, especially breathing medications. DO NOT use inhalers within the four (4) hours prior to having your test. The Test will take 60-75 minutes.

PROCEDURE
A short history is taken. The technician will explain each step as it is performed. For each part of the test, the mouthpiece is placed in the patient's mouth and patient is instructed to seal lips around mouthpiece. A nose clamp is also placed on the nose so no air escapes.

There are nine (9) different tests that must be performed. These require hard, deep and fast breathing. Each maneuver must be done at least three times, if possible.

Most tests are ordered before and after a medication called a bronchodilator is administered. The patient inspires the medication in the form of a mist.

After the medication is given, two of the three tests are repeated at least two times, and the test is finished unless other pulmonary function procedures are ordered.

RESULTS
A report will be available to patient's physician within five (5) business days.

LOCATION
Pulmonary Diagnostics is located on 3 East at the Memorial Healthcare main campus at 826 W. King (Owosso). When leaving the registration area, you will be directed to elevator B. Take this elevator to the third (3rd) floor. Upon exiting the elevator, turn left. The reception area is just inside the double doors on your left.

NOTE: If lab work is ordered on the same day as your test, please allow enough time before your scheduled appointment to have the lab work or other procedures done first.
