National Recognition

We’re excited to announce that we have once again been recognized by the U.S. News & World Report 2023-2024 Best Hospitals for Maternity Care ratings, offering expecting families options for seeking high-quality care for uncomplicated pregnancies.

Memorial Healthcare has also been granted the new designation for Maternity Care Access from U.S. News & World Report. Maternity Care Access Hospitals serve a community that depends on it for access to essential maternity care services. They are more critical than ever as a growing number of communities in the U.S. lack this type of care, increasing the number of maternity care deserts. Of the 680 hospitals reporting, Memorial Healthcare is among the top six percent in maternity care.

What Is the Field of Obstetrics and Gynecology?

Obstetrics and gynecology are two medical specialties that focus on the female reproductive system. An obstetrician is a doctor who specializes in caring for patients during pregnancy and delivering babies. They also provide post-partum care after a patient gives birth. Obstetricians diagnose and treat medical conditions that can occur during pregnancy and perform surgeries related to delivery, such as Cesarean sections.

In contrast, a gynecologist focuses on the overall reproductive system and treats female patients at each stage of life. Gynecologists perform health screenings such as pelvic exams, pap smears, and breast exams. They treat conditions that affect the reproductive system, provide testing for sexually transmitted diseases, and can prescribe contraceptives. They may perform procedures including:

  • Hysterectomy: This surgical procedure removes the uterus, sometimes to treat cervical or uterine cancer.
  • Uterine biopsy: In this procedure, a doctor takes a small sample of uterine cells for testing.
  • Hysterosalpingography (HSG): This X-ray test uses dye to examine the uterus and fallopian tubes.
  • Pelvic ultrasound: This imaging test uses sound waves to capture an image of the uterus.
  • Dilation and curettage (D&C): This minimally invasive surgical procedure removes tissue inside the uterus. A D&C may be required after a patient has had a miscarriage or terminated a pregnancy or if the patient needs to have uterine polyps or fibroids removed.
  • Tubal ligation: This is a surgical procedure in which the fallopian tubes are cut or blocked to prevent pregnancy permanently.

Women’s healthcare providers often study the two specialties of obstetrics and gynecology together. Obstetrics and gynecology are often shortened to OB/GYN, and these providers may focus on sub-specialties within their field, such as:

  • Gynecologic oncology
  • Female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery
  • Reproductive endocrinology and infertility
  • Maternal-fetal medicine
  • Complex family planning

OB/GYN physicians receive extensive training throughout four years of medical school and three to seven years of internship and residency.
