New model allows for clearer delineation of business units, innovative service delivery and partnerships

OWOSSO, Mich., November 29, 2023 — Memorial Healthcare, an independent, community non-profit hospital in Shiawassee County, has adopted a new system-oriented governance structure, which will be known as the Memorial Health System, after unanimous approval from the hospital Board of Trustees.

The move comes after more than two years of deliberation and constitutes a governance and legal restructuring.  The implementation of a system model allows the organization to explore new, innovative partnerships and revenue-generating service lines, such as childcare, clinical research and development projects, to bring additional healthcare services to the community.

“From our industry-leading Institute for Neuroscience to our recently opened Childcare Academy, Memorial Healthcare continually punches above its weight class and redefines expectations of what a community hospital can be,” said Greg Bontrager, Chairman of the Memorial Healthcare Board of Trustees. “Our reach has expanded both geographically and in terms of service offerings over the past several years, and the creation of the Memorial Health System better positions us to continue innovating our healthcare operations to meet the growing and changing needs of patients in mid-Michigan and beyond in the future.”

An initial Memorial Health System Board will be drawn from present members of the Memorial Healthcare Board of Trustees to oversee present and future growth opportunities, as well as oversight of strategic direction for the system as a whole. The makeup of the Memorial Healthcare Hospital Board of Trustees will remain unchanged with a renewed focus on hospital governance to ensure outstanding patient care, quality and safety, and service excellence. Both boards will continue to be populated by members who serve on a voluntary, unpaid basis.

The structure of the new Memorial Health System is unique in that it remains centered around a single community hospital, Memorial Healthcare, and its related business units. While the creation of the Memorial Health System will not change the job status of any employee or provider, expanded reach within new and interesting areas within the healthcare and community landscape is anticipated to create opportunities for professional advancement of team members while attracting additional talent.

The system approach will also provide increasing services to the community while securing Memorial Healthcare’s status as an outstanding independent community hospital.  The system model does not in any way constitute an affiliation or merger with another hospital or hospital system.
