Winter Sports Safety and Injury Prevention Tips

Every year, millions of people flock to ski slopes, skating rinks and frozen ponds to enjoy a few hours of skating, sledding, skiing, ice hockey and other winter sports. Along with those great times come’s higher risks for traumatic brain injuries (TBI).  Memorial Healthcare encourages people to be cautious and take steps to protect themselves this winter season.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, falls are a leading cause of TBI and account for a large proportion of emergency department visits, hospitalizations, and deaths in the United States. Winter sports, such as ice hockey, skiing, and snowboarding pose the greatest risk for developing a serious injury.  Falls are a leading cause of TBI which occur because of environmental conditions from slippery or icy conditions.

Winter sports are a great way for kids and parents to get outside and be active together.  However, it is important to remember to stay safe while having fun.  Here are some tips to make sure your winter sports adventures keep you from a trip to the Emergency Department.

Winter Sports Safety Tips

Keep Warm

  • Multiple layers of clothing works best in the winter. The first layer should keep moisture away from the skin, such as thermal underwear. The top layer should be wind and water proof.

Stay Dry

  • Wet hands and feet can quickly turn into a serious problem, even when temperatures are above freezing. To avoid potential frostbite and hypothermia, make sure your child understands the importance of staying dry.

Use Sunscreen

  • Sunburns not only occur during the summer, they can occur in the winter as well. Regardless of the season, it’s important to wear plenty of sunscreen to prevent painful sunburns and dangerous skin cancers.  However, it is not just your skin that can get burned.  It is important to wear sunglasses or goggles and lip balm during the winter.

Staying Safe

  • Head Injuries –Falls are common during the winter season. If you skate, ski, snowboard, or sled, make sure to wear a helmet to protect against possible head injuries.

Winter is a wonderful time of year to get outside and enjoy the season.  Don’t forget to stay safe, keep warm and have fun.
